Clean Indoor Air Ordinances are taking hold across the country. California has had them in place for years and now a flood of cities and states are passing new laws.
Simply put, these are policies, or ordinances, that cities and towns can pass to make public places smoke-free. They can include work places, such as restaurants, bars, and clubs, as well as outdoor eating areas and even outdoor venues, like stadiums, arenas, and rodeos. It makes eating, socializing, and working in these places much healthier and easier (the food tastes better and you smell much better!).
College students often socialize and work in places that may allow smoking. These establishments can be ideal work places for college students because they allow students to take classes during the day and work in the evenings and on weekends.
Students are the ones with a vested interest in making these places smoke-free and believe it or not, your voice counts for a lot when in comes to Clean Indoor Air Ordinances. To find out about efforts to go smoke-free in your area, visit the American Lung Association and search for your city.
As you might expect, the Tobacco Industry has fought hard to prevent ordinances from passing, including supporting similar-sounding measures that are full of loopholes. The Industry has also lobbied the hospitality industry, filling them with fear and incorrect information about the economic impact of smoking ordinances. They phrase their counterarguments in terms of “individual rights,” but the pro-health movement is all about the health and well being of the larger group. Besides, don’t we all have the right to breathe clean air?
There’s a lot of talk out there about the pros and cons of this…bottom line, being smoke-free is about allowing workers to work in a healthy environment. It’s about the employee’s right to breathe easily and not have to breathe in the smoke from others!
Remember, you can’t control where smoke goes – it goes wherever it wants!
